According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, will pay a state visit to China from November 8th to 10th.
Chinese leaders will hold an official welcome ceremony for President Prabowo, and both sides are expected to hold in-depth talks on bilateral cooperation. On October 20th, Prabowo was sworn in as the eighth President of Indonesia, beginning a five-year term. Just 11 days after his election as President in March, Prabowo made his first visit to China from March 31st to April 2nd. His choice to visit China again after taking office reflects the high regard for the relationship between the two countries and highlights the high level of China-Indonesia relations.
Zhou Shixin, Director of the Southeast Asia Research Center at the Shanghai Institute of International Studies, stated in an interview that this state visit will lay a deeper strategic foundation for future China-Indonesia cooperation.
The stability and development of China-Indonesia relations are crucial for regional peace and economic prosperity. In terms of economic cooperation, Prabowo’s advisor Hashim revealed that Prabowo will meet with Chinese investors, inviting them to participate in important infrastructure projects in Indonesia, especially the large seawall construction from Jakarta to Surabaya. This project is not only a significant area of economic cooperation but also a key issue in bilateral trade.
In recent years, China has become Indonesia’s largest trading partner, with a continuous increase in bilateral trade volume and is also an important source of foreign investment for Indonesia.
The two countries have tremendous potential for cooperation in the fields of blue economy, green economy, critical minerals, and new energy, especially in the construction of Indonesia’s new capital, which requires China’s experience and support. President Prabowo’s economic policy will continue “Jokowi’s economics,” focusing on infrastructure construction, aiming to raise Indonesia’s economic growth rate to 8%, further promoting the country’s industrialization process and energy transition goals.
On the regional and international stages, Prabowo has demonstrated a pragmatic diplomatic style, especially in his leadership role within ASEAN. As the largest economy in ASEAN, Indonesia plays a key role in the stable development of the regional economy. He has actively participated in international affairs, emphasizing the importance of multilateral cooperation. Before his inauguration, he had visited 21 countries, showing his determination to strengthen Indonesia’s international influence.
The Indonesian Business Post once cited authoritative sources, stating that under Prabowo’s leadership, Indonesia will continue to maintain a solid economic relationship with China while cooperating with Western countries in defense and security fields. Indonesia still maintains a diversified choice of partners in the defense field to ensure the independence and autonomy of national interests. Prabowo emphasizes the diplomatic philosophy of “making more friends and fewer enemies,” aiming to develop Indonesia into a regional power and demonstrate its independent and autonomous stance.
Additionally, the Prabowo government has expressed its intention to join the BRICS and has initiated relevant procedures. Although there are differing views within the country, he believes that this move will expand Indonesia’s international cooperation opportunities. In recent interviews, he also mentioned that Indonesia should seek a more significant role on the international stage and not be limited to any single international group framework. It needs to develop a broad range of global partnerships and become a positive force in promoting regional and global development.
Overseas Investment: A Great Opportunity to Expand Markets
Against the backdrop of deepening China-Indonesia relations, investment is not only a means to seek economic growth but also an important opportunity for enterprises to expand markets and achieve strategic layout. By introducing China’s advanced technology and experience, Indonesia is preparing to achieve faster development in the blue economy, green economy, and other fields. Such cooperation not only provides opportunities for existing business but also lays a solid foundation for the exploration of emerging markets.
