Indonesia Confirms Joining BRICS: A New Chapter in Strategic Cooperation

On December 23, Russian President’s Assistant Yury Ushakov announced that Indonesia would officially become one of the BRICS partner countries on January 1, 2025.

The nine countries that will become BRICS partner countries include Indonesia, as well as Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Cuba, Uganda, Malaysia, and Uzbekistan. This expansion of BRICS was decided after the Kazan BRICS summit, where 35 countries submitted applications to join. Of these, 13 were invited, and 9 countries ultimately confirmed their willingness to become partner countries.

Russian President’s Assistant Yury Ushakov stated that the BRICS door will always be open to like-minded countries. Over 20 countries have already expressed interest in joining. He believes that the expansion and cooperation of BRICS is a key factor in promoting the formation of a multipolar world and also helps defend the interests of Global South and Eastern countries.

The BRICS cooperation mechanism was established in 2006, initially consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. South Africa joined in 2011, expanding the group to five countries and changing its English name to BRICS. By 2024, Egypt, the UAE, Iran, and Ethiopia officially became BRICS members. With the inclusion of Indonesia and other partner countries, BRICS will further enhance its global influence and create broader opportunities for economic growth and the multipolarization of global governance.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
On December 24, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning commented on Russia’s announcement of the BRICS partner countries list, saying, “China is willing to work with BRICS members and partner countries in the spirit of openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation to expand practical cooperation in various fields, promote the high-quality development of ‘BRICS Plus’ cooperation, and contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind.”

Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
Joining BRICS aligns with Indonesia’s national interests. After careful consideration and deliberation, the Indonesian government decided to participate in international forums including BRICS. This decision is aimed at maximizing national interests while assessing the potential benefits of participation. Indonesian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rolliansyah Soemirat (pictured left) stated at a press conference in Jakarta on December 21 that all decisions regarding Indonesia’s participation in international forums undergo thorough research and evaluation. He emphasized that Indonesia’s participation in BRICS reflects its active foreign policy and ensures that this move aligns with national interests. Rolliansyah further pointed out that Indonesia does not intend to align itself with any specific global political camp, but instead seeks to actively participate in international affairs to advance its national interests. He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has conducted detailed research on the feasibility of Indonesia joining BRICS, and the results indicate that this decision will bring substantial benefits to Indonesia.

Joining BRICS not only reflects Indonesia’s far-reaching strategic considerations in international affairs but also demonstrates its firm commitment to active participation in global multilateral cooperation. Through this move, Indonesia aims to further enhance its international influence and contribute more to national interests and global development.
